ARITHMETIC Arithmetic Operations (Page 4 of 6)

Now we'll consider some expressions that are more complicated, and will involve the order of operations and use of parentheses. Let's evaluate the expression

5.5/(3.7-2.9)-4.1(-1.3/(1+6.2)).

A helpful tip is to remember that a division bar acts as a grouping symbol. Since we cannot enter the expression exactly as it looks, we must add parentheses to replace the division bars whenever there is more than one term in a numerator or a denominator. In this case, we need parentheses around both denominators.

CLEAR key.

5.5 Divide key. Left parenthesis key. 3.7 Minus key. 2.9 Right parenthesis key. Minus key. 4.1 Left parenthesis key. Negation key. 1.3 Divide key. Left parenthesis key. 1 Plus key. 6.2 Right parenthesis key. Right parenthesis key. ENTER key.
