TRIGONOMETRIC FUNCTIONS Graphing And Analysis (Page 8 of 13)

This function has an absolute maximum point and an absolute minimum point. By analysis, the maximum occurs at (3π/8, 5). Let's verify this using the CALC maximum command. You will need to answer three similar questions during this process. To set the Left Bound, use any value of x near but a little to the left of the maximum. The Right Bound can be any value of x near but a little to the right of the maximum. For the Guess, use a value of x that is close to the maximum itself.

2nd CALC key. 4: menu selection.

2nd key. Left arrow key.... (14 times) ENTER key.
2nd key. Right arrow key.... (4 times) ENTER key.

When the calculator asks each question, the graph is put into trace mode. Just move the cursor to the value of x you want for each question, then press ENTER. The TI-83/84 will mark the bounds at the top of the screen with arrows. The coordinates of the turning point are then displayed, in this case approximately (1.18, 5).
