GRAPHING Zoom Commands (Page 1 of 12)

In this topic we will explore some of the ZOOM commands that allow us to instantly change the viewing rectangle in certain ways. Let's use these commands to explore the graphs of the power functions y = x^2 and y = x^4.

The first step is to enter the expression for each function in the function editor. The dependent variable y must be isolated (it is in both cases). To access the function editor, press the Y= key. key. We will enter the first function using the TI-83/84 function name Y1. The Y1 symbol represents the variable y. Enter the rule for the function to the right of the equal sign. Use the X,T,theta,n key. key to enter the variable x. When done press ENTER, then enter the second function as Y2. (To clear a previous function, press the CLEAR key to delete the expression. Use the down arrow key to move to the next line. Repeat this procedure until all ten function names are blank.)
