As a general rule, parentheses will be necessary anytime the exponent contains an operation, such as an addition, multiplication or division. As a last example, let's evaluate 1000(1+0.08/12)^(12*5). Since the exponent contains a product, additional parentheses are required.

1000 Left parenthesis key. 1 Plus key. .08 Divide key. 12 Right parenthesis key. Caret key. Left parenthesis key.
12 Multiply key. 5 Right parenthesis key. ENTER key.
