Some examples of situations where parentheses are often necessary include:
  • Around an exponent
  • Around the numerator and/or the denominator of a fraction
  • Around an expression contained within a radical or power
  • Around a negative number when raised to a power

The best way to become proficient in entering expressions is to practice! Always check to see that your answer is reasonable. Estimate of what kind of answer you expect, then verify that the result provided by the calculator is "within the ballpark". Don't assume the calculator can read your mind; the expression you entered may NOT be the same as the expression you INTENDED to enter!
